Texas have been given some clear advice from former head coach Urban Meyer as their feud with rivals Texas Tech continues to unfold in front of the world.
For context, Texas’ rivalry with Texas Tech has taken on a new meaning in recent years. With billionaire Cody Campbell now backing Texas Tech, the Red Raiders seem to have renewed belief in their abilities as a program and are happy to engage with their neighbors for more notoriety.
The rivalry is an evolving one, and recently became national news when Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke about scheduling in a recent interview, indirectly taking a shot at Texas Tech and the ease of the draw they possess in the current circumstances.
Urban Meyer has now joined in with a warning for Texas to avoid engaging with Texas Tech for their own good.
“Texas needs to worry about one thing. They don’t need to start hyping up a billionaire. Texas, stay away from that one, man. Because Texas Tech’s good enough to beat you. There’s no win,” Urban Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast.
How Did We Get Here?
The latest chapter of this battle started when Steve Sarkisian referred to Tech when he said a “team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year.”
And that comment drew in Cody Campbell himself on X, as he wrote, “Schedule us then.” “We’ve been talking about it for years, and we are more than willing.”
With Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire also now involved in the feud, it appears that both programs are going in with the intention of having the upper hand. Urban Meyer’s advice, though, might stop Texas from engaging further, as the Red Raiders clearly do benefit more from a potential clash between the two teams.
