Multiple times in recent days, Texas Tech and Brendan Sorsby have seemed to be up a creek without a paddle, but one dropped from the sky. However, his newest paddle in the form of a granted injunction appears to be in question. While he is set to be eligible to return to college football from a courtroom standpoint, the Big 12 has a chance to intervene.
According to college football insider Pete Thamel, in a Thursday post on X, the Big 12 has set the gears in motion to potentially take action, but the conference is not in any rush. If anything happens, it will take time, with things only entering the talking stage this week.
“Sources: Don’t expect any immediate action from the Big 12 on the Brendan Sorsby ruling,” he posted. “The Big 12 has defined a process to address it, which begins with an AD call today. The Big 12 executive board will meet Thursday to discuss options.”
Sorsby is set to miss the first two games of the season due to the court’s ruling, but will otherwise be available to play for the rest of the college football season.
Of course, with the Big 12 hinting at action, the Texas Tech quarterback can’t be guaranteed anything long term. Put simply, Texas Tech isn’t out of the woods yet.
Brendan Sorsby Outlook: Range of Possible Outcomes for 2026
At this point, Brendan Sorsby could find himself back to essentially square one at any time. The Big 12 can throw the book at him and conceivably end his season before it begins at any moment in the coming weeks. If so, Sorsby might be forced to look elsewhere for 2026.
If the Big 12 drops the hammer on Sorsby, he might be able to pursue a change in conference in the next available window, but the wait is set to be a long one, with the next transfer window set to take place in 2027.
That leaves Sorsby with only joining the NFL as an undrafted free agent or pursuing a place in the Canadian Football League.
Of course, taking in Sorsby as a de facto refugee in unconventional circumstances with baggage is not how teams or the quarterback visualized starting an optimal post-college situation.
Once again, fans are left to ask whether Sorsby will play in 2026.
