“Such A Washed Dumb Statement”: RJ Young Calls Out Former SB Champ For Bryce Underwood Analysis

Former Super Bowl champion Eric Weddle has been doubling down on his criticisms of Michigan QB Bryce Underwood, who has been coming in with a ton of hype into his sophomore season. During a podcast appearance, he stated that Underwood “couldn’t throw or play quarterback” and has not rescinded his remarks.

However, Bryce Underwood has found several people defending him, including RJ Young. He took to his “Adapt & Respond” football podcast to talk about how wrong Eric Weddle was regarding his assessment of the Michigan QB.

“That such a washed dumb statement. Playing the position of quarterback in our sport is not as difficult as playing in the NFL. I think that part has generally gone without saying, but I’m going to say it again,” RJ Young stated. “To say that Bryce Underwood is not good enough to lead a team to a national championship is to say that Tom Brady’s belief in him is misplaced.” (3:40)

These comments from Weddle come at an interesting time, especially with his son, Gaige Weddle, from the high school Class of 2028, a prospect that Michigan is currently looking at. He stated that Underwood cannot perform well enough to win a national title.

Weddle was also a Utah legend, and his coach back then was Kyle Whittingham, who is now Bryce Underwood’s new coach over at Michigan. This means that things could get interesting should Bryce Underwood either perform well or fall below expectations.

Eric Weddle Says He Is Not Backing Down On His Bryce Underwood Comments

Despite all the people defending Underwood, Weddle has not backed down, saying so during his appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” doubling down as he had been over the last few days.

“And listen, I don’t take back what I said,” Weddle said. “Obviously, hearing it doesn’t come off very well, but the point is, you have to play quarterback a certain way to win a national championship. And my understanding of Michigan is they expect national championships and these kids are paid to play a certain way, right? So what I saw from two games last year, and then I went out to spring ball, I saw not very good QB play.”

He then challenged Underwood to “Go prove me wrong” and step up in Ann Arbor. For now, he says his criticism stands.
