The Texas Tech Red Raiders are staring at a major dilemma, with coach Joey McGuire left without a fit quarterback months before the start of spring training.
While Cincinnati star transfer Brendan Sorsby was widely expected to be the Red Raiders’ starter for the 2026 season, his decision to enter a treatment program for gambling addiction has cast doubt on his availability to start the season.
With Will Hammond still recovering from an injury and the NCAA’s ghost transfer portal rules, Texas Tech could face major repercussions if it added a quarterback who was not already in the portal.
According to Pete Nakos, these setbacks include a suspension of the head coach for half the season and a fine equivalent to 20% of the program’s total NIL budget. With billionaire booster Cody Campbell pouring into the NIL efforts, that 20% could amount to a massive figure.
Hammond, who backed up Behren Morton in the 2025 season, suffered an ACL injury in a win vs Oklahoma State and missed the entire spring.
Brendan Sorsby Admits To Gambling Addiction
One of the blockbuster transfer portal moves of the 2026 cycle, Sorsby joined the Red Raiders after a successful stint with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Shortly after the move, the senior year QB addressed his gambling addiction and announced he would be stepping away from the program in a statement on social media.
According to reports, Sorsby bet on Indiana Hoosiers football games while a part of the team. As per the NCAA’s gambling rules, any player who bets on their own team or any other team from their own school can “potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports.”
Similarly, betting on any other school’s teams can result in the player losing 50% of their eligibility. Meanwhile, if the total value of the wagers exceeds $800, the decision falls to the NCAA, and punishment can include a permanent loss of eligibility.
The Texas Tech QB has not been accused of influencing the outcomes of any of the games he bet on.
