Brendan Sorsby is starting a new chapter with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and will need his full focus on the team. In an apparent effort to make it possible, the new Red Raiders quarterback has taken a leave of absence.
According to an On3 report posted on Monday, Sorsby’s absence is related to a gambling addiction. The report included additional details in a statement from the team as well as head coach Joey McGuire.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” McGuire said. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
“Texas Tech’s primary focus remains on fostering an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional assistance,” the statement read. “To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech will have no further comment on Brendan’s status or treatment progress at this time. We kindly ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of Brendan and his family.”
The absence timeline is not publicly available. According to Pete Thamel in a Monday post, the journalist reported that the quarterback had made “thousands of bets via a gambling app.”
However, with the season still months away, Sorsby has time to focus on getting better without causing immediate consequences. Still, every missed practice is an added opportunity for other quarterbacks on the roster.
Brendan Sorsby Looks To Build on Hot-Cold 2025 Showing
Brendan Sorsby spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Cincinnati, compiling a quality statistical performance in his second year with the team. However, it was not enough for the quarterback, as he found himself in a new college jersey and not an NFL one.
Sorsby threw for 27 touchdowns and five interceptions, leading the Big 12 in yards gained per pass completion. Of course, while he was productive, the quarterback ran into a brick wall in his final four games of the season, in which his team went 0-4.
Can Sorsby get everything back on track? His future could depend on it.
