“So Nonsensical” – Fans React As Top Players Reportedly Plan Protest Over Wimbledon Prize Money With Limited Media Commitment

A protest at Wimbledon has sparked plenty of discussion among tennis fans. Several top players are reportedly considering a protest over the prize money despite the tournament offering a record of £64.2 million. The protest will reportedly be in the form of limited media commitments.

The prize money protest began during the 2026 French Open due to a dispute over revenue distribution between the world’s top players and the four Grand Slam tournaments. Top ATP and WTA players, including Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Jannik Sinner, have sent a unified message to Wimbledon leadership.

They have reportedly declared a protest over prize money and revenue share, informing the All England Club that they will strictly limit media communication to a maximum of 15 minutes during the first week of the 2026 Championships. This is a symbolic reflection of the fact that Wimbledon currently redistributes slightly under 15% of its total revenue to players as prize money. The players have demanded a higher baseline share of Grand Slam tournament revenues.

Wimbledon’s total prize money for the Championships has been increased by £10.7 million, a 20% rise from last year’s tournament. The overall purse money rose to a record £64.2 million, marking the largest annual increase in the event’s history. One of the journalists shared this news on X, writing:

What Did Aryna Sabalenka Say About The 15-minute Media Protest At The French Open?

During the 2026 French Open, Aryna Sabalenka spent only five minutes with the host broadcaster for an on-camera interview and sat for a 10-minute conference with reporters.

Talking about how she respected the media and the 15-minute protest, she said:

“I’m here to talk to you because I have respect for you guys. We just wanted to make our point and we are united – 15 minutes is better than zero. As I said a thousand times today, I have huge respect, but we know what’s happening here, so thank you so much.”

Similarly, players including Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and more have spoken about this issue at Roland Garros.
