Serena Williams generated buzz after she rejoined the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s registered anti-doping testing pool in late 2025. It’s a required test for players hoping to return to the sport at a professional level. Six months after testing, a player is clear to participate in sanctioned professional events.
At the time, many thought that the 23-time Grand Slam champion was returning to competitive tennis just like her sister. Once those rumors floated, Williams came forward to deny any potential comeback attempt. However, once again, Williams has left fans guessing following her latest interview on the Today show.
When asked if she was returning to tennis, Williams neither denied nor confirmed plans to play again. It was really an awkward interview, which even left the host puzzled over Williams’ intentions.
“I mean, really? Are you asking this on the Today show? Oh my gosh,” Williams said. “I don’t know. I’m just going to see what happens.”
At the same time, tennis insider Craig Shapiro reported that Williams will play a massive event in Saudi Arabia this year. However, he doesn’t mention exactly which event and when will Williams play.
Combining both these updates, Williams might be plotting a comeback and who knows, people will only know when she finally makes the return. For the time being, she’s enjoying her life as a mother of two daughters.
Aryna Sabalenka Shares Honest Feelings Regarding Potential Return of Serena Williams
The tennis world is chiming in over Serena Williams’ latest remarks on the Today show, where she might have indicated that a potential return is not completely out of the picture. When asked about Australian Open finalist Aryna Sabalenka, she feels it would be “cool” to have Williams on the tour.
“I heard that she’s enjoying her life, and whatever makes her happy, I’m happy for her,” she said. “If she wants to come back, that’s her decision. It’s going to be fun to see her back on tour. She’s got the personality, and she’s a fun one. It will be cool.”
Elina Svitolina, who was defeated in the Australian Open semifinals, said that it would be “amazing for the sport” if the 23-time Grand Slam champion indeed returns.
“She’s such a great champion and achieved so much, did so much for our sport and been an inspiration for women around the world,” she said.
It remains to be seen if Williams further explains what she actually meant by her remarks in her recent media appearance.
