Emma Raducanu has decided to change her coach once again. On Thursday, January 29, she announced the end of her partnership with Francisco Roig, who has worked with Rafael Nadal in the past.
As she begins the hunt for her 10th coach in five years, the majority of her fans have urged the 23-year-old to go back to her former coach, Mark Petchey.
Raducanu’s poor form continued at the ongoing Australian Open, as she lost to Anastasia Potapova in straight sets in the second round on January 21. The 2021 US Open title remains the only singles title in the Brit’s cabinet. She has yet to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since winning the New York Major.
Nigel Sears was Raducanu’s first coach in 2021, though the partnership ended in a few months. She teamed up with Andrew Richardson ahead of the 2021 US Open and pulled off a miraculous victory. Before the year ended, the Brit replaced Richardson with Torben Beltz.
She kept changing coaches every few months, with her next partnerships coming with Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, Nick Cavaday, and Vladimir Platenik. Andy Murray’s former coach, Petchey, worked briefly with the World No. 29 at the beginning of 2025, while Roig joined her team in August.
Fans online found it hard to believe that a player had changed so many coaches in such a short period. Most of them hoped that she would rejoin hands with Mark Petchey.
“I’m not sure it’ll be possible but I’d love to see Mark Petchey return to coach Emma Raducanu, even if it were only a temporary part-time arrangement. I thought they worked really well together last year,” a fan said.
“It’s such a shame that Petchey couldn’t coach her full time, because that was so clearly a coaching relationship that actually worked for her,” someone wrote.
“Only Mark Petchey can get her on track,” a fan wrote.
“Mark Petchey, if you’re lurking here on this sub – please try and work something out and get back to working with Emma. Broadcasting will take you back anytime after a coaching hiatus. you were taking her game in the right direction,” someone wrote.
“Petchey said that he would ‘take a bullet for her,” so I’m sure he will be at her service if Emma calls,” a fan commented.
“I would wish the same for Emma (to call Petchey). We all saw the massive improvement in her game,” another one chimed in.
“More Than a Coach to Me” – Emma Raducanu Thanks Francisco Roig As They Part Ways
On Thursday, Emma Raducanu penned a message for her former coach, Francisco Roig, as they ended their six-month partnership. She thanked the 55-year-old for everything that he taught her, writing on her Instagram story:
“Francis. Thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on and off the court. While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know that I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared.”
Raducanu will next play at the WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Romania, beginning February 1.
