Serena Williams’ comeback news has rocked the tennis world to its core, and players from around the globe have been weighing in on the importance of her return. Among the many commenting is Elina Svitolina, who believes Williams’ return would transcend tennis and serve as proof that female athletes can step away to raise a family and then make a comeback if they choose to.
Serena Williams has been hailed as one of the most legendary figures in tennis, having captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles and a staggering number of WTA wins that have helped skyrocket her profile to an elite level. After weeks of anticipatory news, Williams’ comeback was made official after the legend made it clear that she is ready to step onto the professional court. The former World No. 1’s first stop will be at next week’s HSBC Championships at The Queen’s Club in London, where she is scheduled to play doubles for now.
From Naomi Osaka to Elina Svitolina, tennis stars have displayed great admiration for the ultimate matriarch of tennis. After a startling defeat in the quarterfinals against Marta Kostyuk at the French Open on Tuesday, Elina Svitolina gave a press conference, where she shared her thoughts on Williams’s comeback.
Svitolina highlighted her as an inspiration to mothers all over the world, while also comparing her brilliance to that of Roger Federer.
“Serena… it’s a very unique situation. She’s like Roger… you know… Maybe not play for a year or something and then just go and play unbelievable. I think it’s just a different level of GOAT. I’m really excited actually for her to come back. I think it’s a great story and very inspiring for all the moms around the world,” Svitolina said.
It remains to be seen who teams up with the American legend, and while her doubles partner has not been official yet, many have speculated that the rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko is the leading candidate.
Serena Williams Talks About Her Kids
Besides being renowned for her tennis prowess, Serena Williams has embraced motherhood with the same passion and has frequently spoken about the impact that her kids have had on her life. During an interview, Williams highlighted the personalities of her older daughter, Olympia, and the younger one, Adira:
“Olympia is so sweet, she is the best big sister, and then the little one, Adira, is feisty, but she is nice, so I’m obsessed. I’m the youngest and not necessarily being the favorite, but just like being too nice,” she said (1:20).
Since Williams herself was the youngest in the family, and her adoration for Adira stems from seeing herself in the younger one.
