Carlos Alcaraz has been out of action for the past three months due to a wrist injury, which has now caught the attention of former World No. 1 Jimmy Connors. He believes that the Spaniard might risk a big drop in his form and could also prolong his injury if he returns to competition without enough warm-up tournaments before the U.S. Open.
During the latest episode of the podcast “Advantage Connors,” host Jimmy Connors, along with son Brett, discussed Alcaraz’s situation, questioning how well his 2026 season would get on track if he rushed back without enough recovery and warm-up matches. Connors suggested that if Alcaraz is not able to prepare for a U.S. Open comeback, the right thing to do would be to take the entire year off to avoid future setbacks.
“If you are not playing matches, you can practice all you want, but it’s not the same,” he said. “If Carlos doesn’t play anything before the Open, it’s probably better to shut down the year and give yourself an extra couple of months and really heal and be prepared to come back next year.”
Alcaraz was last seen playing at the Barcelona Open in April, where he withdrew after defeating qualifier Otto Virtanen in the first round. The Spaniard reported an injury on his right wrist and, since then, has been absent from all the majors, including Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Carlos Alcaraz’s Recovery Progress From Wrist Injury
Since suffering a wrist injury, Carlos Alcaraz has kept his fans updated on his recovery, most notably through his social media. The Spaniard has kept updating the tennis community with his rehabilitation routines, gym sessions, running on the streets, etc.
Most recently, Alcaraz withdrew from the Montreal Open. He simultaneously shared a snippet of his practice session on social media, where he could be seen engaging in a light training session on a hard court while still sporting the injury band on his right wrist.
It remains to be seen if the seven-time Grand Slam winner will get a medical clearance before the U.S. Open gets underway in late August.
