Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, shared a heartfelt message after the American’s return to tennis at the HSBC Championships left her daughters excited. The legendary player returned to the sport after a hiatus of almost four years.
Williams hung her racquets in 2022 after competing at the US Open to focus on herself and her family. After working on herself and focusing on her business, the American has now returned to the sport, and her first appearance was at the women’s doubles tournament of the Queen’s Club tournament.
She played alongside Victoria Mboko in the round of 16, where they faced Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. The American-Canadian duo produced a dominant performance, claiming a 7-6(2), 6-2 win and advancing to the quarterfinal. Shortly after this match, her husband, Ohanian, posted a bunch of pictures from the match on Threads, where he was seen sitting with their daughters and cheering for the American.
In addition to this, he also shared pictures of the court and a selfie with both daughters and also uploaded his elder daughter’s progress in DuoLingo. Excited about Williams’ return, he penned a message that read:
“Welcome back to tennis, @serenawilliams! So glad we could have your biggest fans here to watch! Also I’m psyched Olympia Ohanian is old enough that I can now quest with her on Duolingo,” wrote Serena Williams’s husband.
Serena Williams opened up about her comeback and the support she received from her family
Before making an appearance on the competitive tennis court, Serena Williams sat for a pre-tournament press conference, where she was asked about what changed her mind to make a comeback to the sport after she denied the rumors of the same in December last year. Responding to this, she said:
“Yeah, in December I definitely was not and then um was just talking to a few people and just you know chatting about different possibilities of just having fun and you know something a little bit different and so just kept talking and talking and then I was like well why not for lack of a better explanation,” said Serena Williams.
She further spoke about the immense support she received from her family, adding:
“Well, everyone is so supportive, you know, and um everyone was like, “What are you thinking?” I’m like, “Well, it’s summer. The kids aren’t in school, so it’s a perfect time to kind of get out there and, you know, just have fun and, you know, see what happens.”
