After winning his maiden Roland Garros title, Alexander Zverev has earned praise from many tennis legends, including seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander. However, Wilander made a wild assertion that has not sat well with the tennis community. Fans have negatively reacted to the Swedish legend’s claim that Zverev could form a new “Big-3” with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner after winning the French Open.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev registered a stunning win against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a grueling five-set French Open final, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. Zverev has now become the first German major champion since Boris Becker to win a Grand Slam title.
Despite having lost to both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner during his previous Grand Slam finals, Zverev has now been put on the same pedestal as the two major icons. Even before the final match, Swedish legend Mats Wilander gave a statement in favor of Zverev, saying:
“Jannik and Carlitos might want to be careful. We could soon start talking about a Big Three, where he (Zverev) would definitely have a place.”
Fans have, however, lambasted the Swede, citing his comments as a premature take that totally ignores the superior pedigree of Alcaraz and Sinner in comparison to Zverev.
Someone wrote:
“Wilander is very ignorant he always says stupid things, surprising coming from a 7 time slam champ. Zverev is the clear #3 and better than 99% of the field but very far from Sinner and quite far from Carlos.”
One user wrote:
“these people got to be smoking something because there’s no way you can say this after everything. He is like 0-10 against Sinner ?? His level is atp500, which is what he had in this GS and that’s why he won.”
Another user wrote:
“Wilander always has hot takes and he is victim of recency bias all the time. Cobolli provides zero resistance in that fifth set. Zverev may or may not win more majors but big 3 c’mon.”
One user wrote:
“Just because of 1 Slam where he didn’t beat a top 10 player. Oh yeah big 3 for sure 😆🙄”
Another user wrote:
“Mats has the attention span of a mosquito and just says whatever he feels like in the moment, can’t stand him.”
Zverev’s title at the French Open gave the World No. 3 his first ever Grand Slam title, coming after three runner-up finishes.
Alexander Zverev Talks About The Emotions He Felt After Lifting Up The Roland Garros Trophy
Speaking at his post-match press meet after winning the French Open, Alexander Zverev spoke about the unbelievability, shock, and emotional relief that took over his mind right after the win, saying:
“It was a combination of things. First of all, I didn’t believe that I won, then I saw my box, and they all kind of celebrated, and that’s when I realized that I won, especially seeing my father raise up his arms; that was when it kinda hit me that ‘okay, I won.’ Then when I was on the ground, all the emotions came out.”
The German added:
“because I think this court is very special to me, but is also special in a very positive way but also special in a negative way because I’ve had some of my most toughest moments of life here in my tennis career.”
Zverev is currently in preparation for the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, where Jannik Sinner is the defending champion.
