Lindsey Vonn’s decision to push forward with her Winter Olympics ambitions despite another ACL injury has sparked debate across the sporting world. But as critics question whether the skiing legend is making the right call, she has found strong backing from Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs.
Vonn recently suffered another devastating crash on Friday in a World Cup race in Switzerland after crashing on the nets. This accident led to her ACL tear, putting a question on her appearance at the Winter Olympics. However, despite the serious injuries, the American recently announced that she will be competing in the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
Even though the 41-year-old received widespread applause for her decision, she also faced scrutiny over her choice to compete at the Olympics. One journalist suggested that she may be risking too much by continuing her competitive comeback following yet another knee setback.
Taking to X, the journalist reposted Vonn’s video announcing her Olympics decision and wrote:
“Girl…Maybe don’t!!!!!”
The tennis great-turned-pundit came out swinging in defense of Vonn and delivered a passionate response to those doubting the skier’s judgment and resilience. She wrote:
“Imagine telling someone who’s had more knee surgeries than any person I know, who came back from a knee replacement at 40 and who won on the world cup stage in a year to dominate in almost every race she’s skied in, that she doesn’t know what her capacity on skis is?” said Stubbs.
Serena Williams’ Former Coach Rennae Stubbs Backed Coco Gauff on Her Comments About USA Fans
During her United Cup campaign, Coco Gauff openly expressed her frustration over the lack of support from American fans at international tournaments. The US star admitted she often feels disappointed by the low turnout, stating that they are among the worst when it comes to showing up to support their players abroad.
“I feel like we’re definitely in the tennis department, the worst when it comes to that. I’ve always said I wish our country in other places would show up throughout the world the way we see maybe smaller countries support.”
She added:
“But I also think it’s because our country is good in so many sports, so it’s just hard. I do think there are more Americans that come out in Melbourne than necessarily here, but I would like to see some more Americans if you make it to Sydney — more than there were last year.”
This statement garnered criticism from fans, and amid this, she received support from Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs. She quickly defended the World No. 5 by calling her the classiest person she knows.
“@CocoGauff is literally 1 of the classiest people our sport has to offer in so many ways. She works hard, she’s incredibly respectful to everyone around her, including her opponents, the media & fans, etc. What she said wasn’t wrong, just a truthful comment from a truthful person.”
Serena Williams’ former coach never shies away from voicing her opinions on social media and once shared her honest opinion on Caitlin Clark’s national titles compared to Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers.
