After a four-year hiatus, American legend Serena Williams marked her return with a commanding statement at Queen’s Club, registering a dominant, straight-sets doubles win. Partnering alongside Canada’s 19-year-old sensation Victoria Mboko, the pair powered their way through their opener against Nicole Melichar-Martinez & Erin Routliffe, winning 7-6(2), 6-2.
Serena Williams’ historic comeback has been the most talked-about affair since last month, and now, with her first professional win in four years, Williams has been able to generously prove to the world that she has still got the same zest for success.
Fellow athletes and fans took to social media to share their admiration for the 44-year-old afterwards, fondly registering their nostalgia and marveling at the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s innate talents.
Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard took to her social media and posted a story, writing:
“Here we gooooooo. Why am I nervous for Vicky rn (followed by smiley emojis).

Britain’s own Katie Boulter, who is also playing at Queen’s Club, posted a story that included a live snapshot of Williams and Mboko in action, alongside an undisputed emoji tag.

Ukraine’s tennis pro, Lesia Tsurenko, also shared a photo of her watching the doubles match live, with a caption that read:
“It feels like nothing has ever changed.”

Other fans, too, went on social media and admired Williams’ show-stopping comeback to the pro level.
One user wrote:
“Serena Williams hasn’t played for 4 years and still got the best serve on tour😍🫦”
Another user wrote:
“50-year-old serena still has a much better serve than iga lolol”
Someone also wrote in response:
“Of course she does. No one comes close, even when she double-faults, especially since she cements her wins with aces. My, Queen!”
Serena Williams Talks About Her Prep for the Next Round
After the first-round win at Queen’s Club, Serena Williams spoke about what areas she thinks need more improvement that would yet again help her stand tall and take the win at her next match:
“I need to make some returns next match. I didn’t miss one in practice, but… that was a little embarrassing out there, but the good news is I can do better,” she said (1:22).
While Williams has not yet ruled out appearing at Wimbledon, her current focus remains starkly on her next match, as she teams up with Mboko to face Leylah Fernandez
and Laura Siegemund.
