Madrid Open Injury Tracker: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz & Taylor Fritz Among Early Withdrawals

The Madrid Open is generally participated in by several top-ranked players, but this year, at least three major withdrawals are noted, including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. The ATP 1000 Masters tournament starts next week, from April 20 at Caja Mágica, Madrid.

Let’s take a look at players and their reasons for withdrawing from the tournament leading up to the French Open.

    Madrid Open Injury Tracker

    Novak Djokovic

Djokovic remains absent on the tour after Jack Draper defeated him in the fourth round of Indian Wells last month. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is dealing with a shoulder injury that forced him to skip the Masters 1000 events in Miami and Monte Carlo. Now, he will miss another tournament, making it three in a row as he posted the following on social media:

“Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete this year. I’m continuing my recovery in order to be back soon.”

    Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz missed the Barcelona Open and is in line to miss the tournament in Madrid as well. After losing the Monte-Carlo Masters final to Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz was preparing to play in Barcelona. However, a wrist injury forced him to skip the Barcelona Open and just now an update has come along that he won’t be able to participate in Madrid as well.

“Madrid is home, one of the most special places on the calendar for me, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row,” the seven-time Grand Slam champion said in an Instagram post.

“It hurts especially not to be able to be in front of my fans, in a tournament that’s so special to me. Thank you for your continued support, and I hope to see you soon.”

Alcaraz will now hope to get fit in time for Roland Garros, which takes place from 18 May to 7 June.

    Taylor Fritz

Fritz has remained largely absent from the tour this year because of his knee issue. His last appearance came in the Miami Open, where he was defeated in the Round of 16 by Jiri Lehechka. After missing the tournaments in Monte-Carlo and Munich, it was expected the American would be able to recover in time for the Madrid Open, but it appears he couldn’t.

Apart from these three players, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Jacob Fearnley, Sebastian Korda, Kamil Majchrzak, Arthur Cazaux and Holger Rune are also set to miss the Madrid Open.

As a result, several players have directly entered the main draw, including Roberto Bautista Agut, Alexander Blockx, Sebastian Ofner and Alexandre Müller.
