Martina Navratilova criticized former soccer player Megan Rapinoe over her “Black girls” comment during a discussion about biological sex verification for female athletes.
During her appearance on The View on Tuesday, Rapinoe addressed a proposed Washington state ballot initiative that would require female student-athletes to go through biological sex verification, including physical examinations. The former soccer player argued that it would disproportionately affect Black girls. She said:
“There’s a bill in washington happening right now that’s going to require all girls, just like full stop, to go through a sex test, an invasive like examining their genitals to see if they’re a woman. We know that means. Black girls are going to get questioned more and they’re going to get questioned first.”
A clip of Rapinoe’s statement circulated on social media, drawing a response from Navratilova. Reacting to the video, she slammed the $5,000,000-worth soccer player in a post on X, writing:
“Hard to unpack all these lies… shame on Megan.”
Megan Rapinoe is an active advocate for transgender rights and inclusion in sports.
When Martina Navratilova opened up about why she is against allowing trans women to compete in women’s sports
In 2023, Martina Navratilova had a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher and weighed in on her stance on transgender participation in women’s sports. She said her position was not against transgender athletes but “against male bodies competing as women.”
She elaborated:
“I’m all for trans rights on a civil level, 100 percent, every which way. This is not against trans athletes. This is against male bodies competing as women, if they identify as women. Many sports don’t even have any mitigation, any allowance for lowering the testosterone level, et cetera. But what has been proven, even when you do take those testosterone blockers or hormone therapy, even after 15 years, male bodies still retain physical advantage over women athletes.”
She added:
“We are not against trans athletes. We are for women athletes to compete on as level a playing field as possible, which means the males who now identify as women, should compete in a male category and women who identify as men but don’t take testosterone can compete as women. Because there is still no advantage physically over other women athletes.”
Martina Navratilova started her tennis career in 1973 and ended her competitive career in September 2006.
