“Unacceptable” – Indian Wells Faces Strong Criticism As Tennis Insider Questions Amanda Anisimova & Victoria Mboko Playing With Empty Stands

The tennis insider, who is also the founder of the Racquet magazine, Caitlin Thompson, recently weighed in on the empty stadium during the Amanda Anisimova and Victoria Mboko clash at the Indian Wells.

Mboko and Anisimova locked horns in the tournament on March 11, where the former delivered an impressive performance, claiming a straight-set (6-4, 6-1) win. Apart from the scoreboard, another thing that grabbed attention was the mostly empty stadium. Their match took place in Stadium 2, which accommodates almost 8000 fans, and during this season, it has faced multiple empty seats.

This situation came after the tournament brought a change in its ticket policy. In previous years, the officials would allow fans with ground passes to enter the stadium and gain access to the upper bowl; however, this year, the entire stadium has come under reserved seating, which has made it inaccessible for fans with ground passes.

In the recent episode of Rennae Stubbs’ podcast, the tennis insider, Thompson, weighed in on the empty stands during the clash between Mboko and Anisimova, blaming Indian Wells for the same. (38:00 onwards)

“I think the fact that any match that is the quality of Victoria Mboko and Amanda Nisimova, that has willing tennis fans, but empty stands, unacceptable. And I think a major failing on this part of this year’s tournament has been that decision to change stadium two from grounds pass to ticket. Now, I think generally speaking, and I’m going to say something extremely controversial, but I mean it, I don’t think any tournament should be double dipping and selling night session tickets. I think it’s an unmitigated disaster. I think it’s created a scheduling problem across tennis. I think, I get why they do it,” said the insider.
She added:“It’s obviously commerce. They’ve never had a problem with this before because people bought the ticket and stayed as long as they could. And you know, tickets at a place like Wimbledon could be resold to fans who queue if people are leaving. It’s too many.”
Following her win against Anisimova, Mboko advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.

Victoria Mboko on Her Loss Against Aryna Sabalenka at The Indian Wells

Victoria Mboko and Aryna Sabalenka locked horns with each other in Indian Wells’ quarterfinals on March 12, where the Belarusian dominated both sets, claiming a 7-6(0), 6-4 victory, and advancing to the semifinals. Following the upset, the Canadian addressed the media in the press conference, where she laid bare her experience of her debut at Indian Wells, revealing that she had a fun week. Praising her opponent for her skills, she said:
“Well, it was a really fun week. It’s my first time playing here, so not that many expectations for myself. Aryna played really great tennis today, and I could leave the court today just with a lesson more than a loss,” said Victoria Mboko.
She further spoke about her game after she was asked about being aggressive during the showdown.

“I mean, I do find, you’re right, I had a lot of chances in the first set. And, I mean, it’s unfortunate that I was unable to kind of take them as much as I could, but she was playing really well, especially on pressure points. I gotta give credit to her there. I feel like sometimes I was, like, maybe one or two points away from kind of maybe changing how the first set would have went and changing the momentum. But yeah, that’s something I could work on for the next time,” she added.

Before her Indian Wells appearance, she competed at the Qatar Open, where she progressed to the finals but fell short of lifting the trophy after her loss against Karolina Muchova.
