World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina are set to face off in a summit clash for the second time this year. After their exciting showdown in Melbourne last month, Sabalenka and Rybakina will meet in the BNP Paribas Open final at Indian Wells on Saturday, March 14.
Fans and analysts are eagerly awaiting the contest between the two in-form players, as the Kazakh will try to beat Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final for the second time in her career. Meanwhile, the Belarusian will look to avenge her 2026 Australian Open final loss against the World No. 3.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Elena Rybakina Head-to-Head
Sabalenka and Rybakina have faced each other 15 times, with the Belarusian narrowly edging the Kazakh 8-7. In these meetings, while Sabalenka has registered wins on grass, clay, and hard surfaces, all of Rybakina’s wins against the four-time Grand Slam champion have come on hard surfaces.
The Kazakh’s dominance over Sabalenka on hard courts will be a major talking point ahead of their summit clash at Indian Wells. The game is too close to call, with momentum on either side. Most fans and analysts believe the match will go the distance on Saturday night.
Sabalenka vs Rybakina – Recent Meeting
Sabalenka and Rybakina’s most recent meeting came in the 2026 Australian Open final in Melbourne. The Kazakh dug deep to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and claim the second Grand Slam title of her career.
The win marked Rybakina’s second straight triumph over Sabalenka, after she had defeated the World No. 1 in the WTA Finals title clash in November 2025. In the past five meetings between the two, Rybakina leads the head-to-head battle 3-2.
Sabalenka vs Rybakina -Their Journey to the Indian Wells Final
Sabalenka has not dropped a single set on her way to the summit clash at Indian Wells. After receiving a bye in the R1, the Belarusian defeated Himeno Sakatsume in R2, Jaqueline Cristian in R3, Naomi Osaka in the round of 16, Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals, and Linda Noskova in the semifinals.
Rybakina, too, received a bye in the first round and dropped only one set, in her R2 clash against Hailey Baptiste, on her way to the final. The Kazakh then defeated Marta Kostyuk in R3, Sonay Kartal in the Round of 16, Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals, and Elina Svitolina in the semifinals.
What Did the Players Have to Say Ahead of the Indian Wells Final?
After their semifinal wins, both Rybakina and Sabalenka expressed their readiness for the summit clash. Both players are well-versed with each other’s gameplan, and it will be a battle of minds on the court to see who deploys their strategy best and earliest.
“We know each other’s games very well. It’s going to be a difficult match where we both are going to try to serve well, that’s for sure, put pressure, and…we will see what’s going to happen,” Rybakina said.
“I’ll make sure that I’m more than ready on Sunday, and I’ll bring my best tennis, make sure that this is the year,” Sabalenka said.
