Coco Gauff has faced a huge setback in her WTA rankings after her shocking end at Roland Garros, an upset loss against Anastasia Potapova in the opening week for he defending champion. The drop has marked a four-year low in the American’s resume as she struggles to regain her form.
Gauff started her campaign at the French Open as the World No. 4, with 6,749 ranking points to her name. This dropped to 4,749 points after the 2,000 points from the tournament were taken away. The 130 points from this year, for reaching the third round, currently puts her at 4,879 points.
The American will, therefore, slip to No. 7 in the WTA live rankings. The six players now ahead of her are: Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova and Mirra Andreeva. The last time Gauff was ranked as low as World No. 7 was all the way back in 2023, the same year she won the US Open beating Sabalenka in the final.
This year, the French Open final will take place between Andreeva and qualifier Maja Chwalinska. Gauff, meanwhile, will shift her focus to the grass season, with Wimbledon scheduled to take place next month.
Coco Gauff Talks About The Advice Received from Venus Williams
Coco Gauff has made no secret of her admiration for Venus Williams, having played alongside the legend in doubles, and has frequently named her as an inspiration behind her tennis journey. During an interview, Gauff opened up about the timeless advice received from Williams about dealing with negative criticism:
“I played doubles with her once and she said “be authentically yourself and keep being you.”
Gauff highlighted elsewhere how this statement frequently helped her deal with mounting expectations and unnecessary scrutiny that comes with being an elite athlete.
