The tennis community has been in complete awe after teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva dismantled Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk during the Roland Garros semifinals to advance to her first-ever Grand Slam final. Andreeva’s encounter with Kostyuk turned out to be the event’s most high-profile showdown, with geopolitical undertones on a tennis court. Since her victory, fellow players, including Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, and Hollywood sensation Lily Collins, have sent in their celebratory reactions to praise the young prodigy’s victory.
Mirra Andreeva stepped onto the clay on Thursday against a nervous Marta Kostyuk and right from the get-go, delivered a high-class performance that sealed a rousing 6-1, 6-3 victory. With this win, Andreeva broke Kostyuk’s 17-match winning streak and became the third-youngest Roland Garros finalist in modern history.
The win has also let the Russian avenge her previous straight-set losses to Kostyuk, which took place during the Brisbane quarterfinal in January and in the Madrid final in April. The Russian’s victory met a staggering reception from her admirers worldwide.
Taking to social media, Belarusian WTA stars Sabalenka and Azarenka, alongside American actress Lily Collins, dropped in their reaction to Andreeva’s celebratory post to commend her on the achievement.
Sabalenka wrote:
“Let’s go 🔥🙌”
Victoria Azarenka reacted:
“Умничка ❤️❤️❤️”
Lily Collins wrote:
“🥰🥰🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻”
Elsewhere, Maja Chwalinska has also made history after becoming the first qualifier in tennis history to have made it to the final of the French Open, beating Diana Shnaider 7-6 (4), 6-4 to book her spot in Saturday’s final.
Mirra Andreeva Talks About Dealing With Scrutiny on Her Nationality
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, players from both countries have had a tough time reconciling the political differences within a sporting arena, and Andreeva has been no exception. After her match with Kostyuk, the latter refused to shake hands with the Russian, a gesture that Andreeva, however, did not respond to with a controversial reaction.
During the post-match press conference, Andreeva was asked about her views on the general scrutiny faced by Russian players, to which she answered by mentioning how her busy schedule lets her get her mind off the subjects not related to tennis.
“When I play, I try not to read anything, watch anything, or listen to anything. We are very busy with what we do, everyday is super busy with practing, warmups, recovery, cooldowns, and by the time we get to our hotels, it’s 7PM. All I’m trying to focus on his playing my match and doing my routine and that’s it,” said Andreeva (9:13).
It’s a first Grand Slam final for both Andreeva and Chwalinska, and it remains to be seen who will lift the Roland Garros trophy on Saturday afternoon.
