Emma Navarro’s form showed no signs of improvement at the WTA 125 event in Austin, as the former World No. 8 crashed out of the tournament following a straight-set opening-round loss to Lulu Sun. Prior to her participation in Austin, Navarro played at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where Sonay Kartal upset her in three sets in the second round. The American’s poor run and her ongoing fitness issues have drawn plenty of criticism from fans.
Barring her quarterfinal finish at the Adelaide Open earlier in the season, the 24-year-old’s results have been woeful so far this year. As a result, her ranking has plummeted, and she finds herself ranked World No. 25 at the time of writing. In the live rankings, she is at No. 27.
Following Navarro’s 4-6, 4-6 loss to Sun in Austin, fans on X (formerly Twitter) had a field day criticizing the former No. 8.
“Emma Navarro couldn’t even vulture a WTA125 event 😭😭😭 it’s so over for her”
“Emma Navarro didn’t just “lose confidence.” Her entire 2024–25 game plan got decoded—fast. The WTA evolved into a take-it-early, hit-through-pace ecosystem, and her heavy-topspin chess match is getting turned into target practice.”
“Emma Navarro went to Austin to gain confidence and is leaving worse than before . Losing early in another tournament gives her more time to put on even more weight.”
One fan, rather perplexed by Navarro’s loss to the 100th ranked Sun in Austin, added:
“NAVARRO LOST IN THE FIRST ROUND OF A 125??”
Yet another fan brought up Jasmine Paolini as well, opining that the Italian and Navarro’s respective levels right now are a far cry from how they were in 2024. This fan wrote:
“Emma Navarro and Paolini peaked in 2024 now they both washed”
Emma Navarro’s Loss To Sonay Kartal At Indian Wells Came After American Failed To Convert Match Point
At the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Navarro had a match point. However, Kartal saved it and then went on to turn the tables on the American to produce one of the upsets of the combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 hardcourt event. The Brit didn’t just overcome Navarro, but also a back problem for which she took a medical timeout during the contest.
Later, reflecting on her win over Navarro, Kartal said in her post-match interview:
“I am just super proud of how I fought through that. It would have been easy to throw in the towel, but it is matches like that which make you super proud of yourself.”
If Navarro’s performances don’t improve soon, it’s quite likely that she’ll find herself out of the top 30 in the coming months, which could seriously jeopardize her chances of progress at future events, particularly the WTA 1000 tournaments and the Majors.
