Coco Gauff’s Ex-Coach Raises Questions After Bam Adebayo Breaks Kobe Bryant’s NBA History With 83-Point Game

Coco Gauff’s former coach Brad Gilbert, while impressed with Bam Adebayo’s performance to break one of Kobe Bryant’s records, was left with one big question on his mind. Adebayo was in the zone during the Miami Heat’s showdown against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, March 11.

While Adebayo’s talent was never in question, he was primarily a defensive player who averaged around 18 points a match. However, he defied the norm with a 83-point haul against the Wizards on Tuesday night, helping the Heat beat their rivals 150-129. He surpassed Bryant’s total of 81 points in a single match, and now trails only the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points in one game during his stint with the Philadelphia Warriors in 1962.

Gilbert was keeping track of Adebayo’s performance right from the start. While he was left awestruck by his impressive showing, he felt as if he could’ve done even better. Adebayo was substituted for a short while in the fourth quarter. Gilbert wondered out loud that had the 28-year-old been in the game for the entire duration, he could’ve certainly scored a few more points.

“Wizards vs. Heat (Mar 10, 2026) Live Score – ESPN holt Toledo 2nd highest scoring game in nba history but should he have been in the game the last 5 mins of total blowout and crazy number free throws,” Gilbert wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Gilbert’s attention wasn’t solely on basketball, and he also kept a track of the fourth-round showdown between Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca at the BNP Paribas Open 2026 at Indian Wells. The Italian pipped the teenager in two tie-breaks. As for Gilbert’s former protege Gauff, her campaign came to an unfortunate end due to an injury.

Brad Gilbert’s Former Mentee Coco Gauff Retires From Indian Wells 2026 Due To An Injury

Coco Gauff was coached by Brad Gilbert from July 2023 to September 2024. She won her maiden Major title at the US Open 2023 under his guidance. They’ve remained on friendly terms since the termination of their partnership.

Like most other top players, Gauff was also participating in the ongoing BNP Paribas Open 2026 at Indian Wells. However, an injury brought a premature end to her campaign. She was forced to retire from her third-round contest against Alexandra Eala on Sunday, March 8, due to a left arm injury. It marked just her second career retirement, following her previous one at the Cincinnati Open 2022.

There’s no word regarding Gauff’s participation or withdrawal from the Miami Open. The season’s fourth WTA 1000 tournament will get underway from March 17. Since she will receive a first-round bye, she won’t have to play a match until at least March 19. As such, she still has over a week before she decides on her participation in Miami.
