Lane Kiffin’s move from Ole Miss to LSU was among the most controversial ones that took place in the middle of the 2026 college football season.
While most people critiqued Kiffin for ditching the Rebels in the middle of their historic playoff run, others defended his decision, saying that he would have more resources to win a national championship at LSU than he would’ve had at Ole Miss.
The pressure is on Kiffin now that he is gearing up for his first year as the Tigers’ head coach in the 2026 season, which is just a few months away.
Talking about what success and failure would look like for Kiffin, Aaron Rodgers’ brother Jordan shared his thoughts on Thursday:
”So you better double down and figure that out really quick. And I know it’s not going to be easy. And I know the excuses galore if they struggle this year because so many Portal players. But what did he make his reputation on? Being the Portal King. Everybody on that roster last year that was their best player was a first-year Portal guy.”
“So if you can’t do better than that at LSU with more resources, in my opinion, it’s a failure. Doesn’t mean he won’t eventually win a national championship. I think he will. But that’s the expectation because of the why. Why he left Ole Miss, and that’s the pressure he’s got to deal with.”
Paul Finebaum Makes Bold Prediction for Lane Kiffin’s Year 1 at LSU
Paul Finebaum has been one of the most vocal critics of Kiffin ever since the Ole Miss-to-LSU move, and the two even had a ruffle on X a few months ago.
However, Finebaum did express his belief in Kiffin having a successful first year at LSU during his appearance on “SportsCenter.”
“I’m in,” Finebaum said. “He’s got one of the best rosters in college football. The question is chemistry. He brought in Sam Leavitt. He’s brought in so many amazing players in the portal… He’s one of the best coaches in the country. So, count me in.”
In another analysis, Finebaum disagreed on the notion that it’s championship or bust for Kiffin, who signed a 7-year, $91M contract with the Tigers.
