After Lane Kiffin left the Ole Miss Rebels high and dry ahead of their CFP campaign, new head coach Pete Golding has been trying to one-up his former boss. He has done so already in recruitment, as he landed four-star wide receiver Miguel Whitley, a 2027 prospect that Kiffin and LSU had also been eyeing.
This is a big win for Ole Miss, as Whitley is ranked as the No. 66 overall recruit from the class of 2027, according to Rivals. He chose the Rebels not just over Lane Kiffin’s LSU, but also over Tennessee and Arkansas, which were also seen as favorites in landing the wide receiver.
He currently plays for the St. Augustine Purple Knights in New Orleans, Louisiana. For many, LSU might have been the obvious destination because it is in the same state, but him going to Ole Miss instead speaks volumes. He is ranked No. 30 in his position and No. 7 in the state of Louisiana.
Ole Miss was ranked the overall favorite to land him, however, with a 76/5% chance of doing so. LSU came in second with a 22.5% chance. While L’Damian Washington had been his primary recruiter, Pete Golding himself has had a direct hand in his recruitment as the secondary recruiter, and that may have played a role in the wide receiver’s decision to go to Oxford.
Pete Golding Brought Out DK Metcalf To Win Miguel Whitley Over
It seems like Pete Golding really wanted to get Miguel Whitley, and he even enlisted Ole Miss alum and NFL superstar DK Metcalf to help impress the wide receiver. Whitley spoke with On3 regarding his official visit and confirmed Metcalf was there.
“The official visit went great. It’s a lot of people from The Boot here, so I feel at home,” he said. “When I went there, I met with DK (Metcalf), so just seeing that really opened my eyes … seeing the biggest of the biggest come from that school. It’s like a blueprint.”
Whitley is a massive addition to the Rebels, as he caught 46 passes for 869 yards and scored 14 touchdowns last season. He is an incoming senior, which means he will be heading to Oxford after next season if he does not get flipped.
