Electronic Arts unveiled the cover of College Football 27, but notably left out Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes. The program cracked a joke after being omitted from both the standard and deluxe editions.
Ohio State’s social media team responded in a familiar Day manner. They tagged the EA Sports official X account and wrote:
“We have a better idea for the cover.”
They edited their own “Buckeye Stripe Edition” cover for EA Sports College Football 27, featuring quarterback Julian Sayin.
EA Sports revealed the standard cover for College Football 27, featuring Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney, and Ole Miss Rebels running back Kewan Lacy. Meanwhile, the deluxe cover featured Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti, USC Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava, Texas Longhorns defensive end Colin Simmons, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish cornerback Leonard Moore.
Ohio State, however, was absent entirely. However, they had a massive representation in the previous installment. In College Football 26, Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith featured on the standard-edition cover with Alabama star Ryan Williams, while Ryan Day, Smith, and safety Caleb Downs all appeared on the deluxe cover.
Who Could Have Represented Ohio State On EA Sports College Football 27?
The obvious choice of representation would be wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Athletes on the cover are generally famous and do well in their respective positions. Smith is both, so it was a surprise that he didn’t feature on the 2027 edition cover. Even though he might have featured on the 2026 edition, it’s not like EA Sports has repeated players for their cover editions.
Another choice could be quarterback Julian Sayin, whom the program even pointed out on social media. The sophomore enjoyed a breakthrough season, finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist after passing for 3,610 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He set a Big Ten single-season record with a 77.0% completion percentage.
Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day could also have featured on the deluxe edition, where Curt Cignatti was spotlighted. Day has constructed a strong roster in Columbus, and if it were not for Indiana, they would have been on pace to defend their title.
On the defense, Caleb Downs is rising. Though defensive players rarely get cover treatment, if there was supposed to be one name for that, it could very well have been Downs. He is one of college football’s premier defenders. He also appeared on the College Football 26 deluxe cover.
