The Oklahoma wrestling coach, David Taylor, made his feelings known about his team sending eight wrestlers to the Big 12 Wrestling Championships finals. The finals will take place on March 7 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Cowboys wrestling team wrapped up day 1 of the championships with incredible performances. Amid the performances, they saw tornado alerts, which suspended the tournament for nearly an hour, and after restarting at 7:20 pm, a total of eight wrestlers from Oklahoma advanced to the finals.
The wrestlers, including Troy Spratley (125 pounds), Jax Forrest (133 pounds), Casey Swiderski (149 pounds), Sergio Vaga (141 pounds), Landon Robideau (157 pounds), LaDarion Lockett (165 pounds), Alex Facundo (174 pounds), and Konner Doucet (heavyweight), progressed to the finals of the Big 12 Wrestling Championships.
Following the selection of the finalists and the conclusion of Day 1, Taylor reacted to eight finalists being selected from Oklahoma. Emphasizing the hard work the team needs to do to maintain their dominance, he said:
“We’ve got to keep progressing, got to keep scoring points, got to keep closing matches out on top, got to just continue to build like, you know we got we got eight you know guys in the finals. You know, we’re going to have you know nine guys wrestling tomorrow and just nine more opportunities, or however many opportunities they get, to just, you know, learn and get better and make mistakes and wrestle through them. And, you know, we’re going to be challenged tomorrow, you know, so it’s good for our guys, and we just got to keep getting better,” said David Taylor.

In the aforementioned interview, David Taylor also expressed his views on Konner Doucet progressing to the heavyweight finals at the Big 12 Wrestling Championships. Opening up about encouraging him to do his best in the finals, the coach said that he has to make the most of his skills in the finals.
Talking about doing the run out in front of the crowd, he said: (4:04 onwards)
“Yeah, I mean, we don’t do this to just run out in front of the crowd and shake hands in the finals, you know? We’re doing it because we want to be the best and that’s what he wants to do, you know? So, just continue to encourage him of that. We’ve shown a lot of progress this year,” said David Taylor.
He added:
“We’re getting here towards the end today and the dudes getting bonus points for us, uh, which is it’s important in these tournaments. It does. I mean, he’s a really good heavyweight. He’s great kid, great leader. We talk about that a lot. He’s got to go make the most of it tomorrow. You know, he got seven minutes wrestling number one in the country.”
David Taylor was hired as head coach of the Oklahoma wrestling team in May 2024, after the former coach John Smith retired.
