The neon lights of Las Vegas have seen the return of the US Open Wrestling 2026, as this year’s tournament has seen athletes not compete solely for the title but with the main goal of redefining college wrestling and making it to the world team.
The senior men’s freestyle action inside the arena produced tremendous excitement, and now, with the finals approaching, there is a great deal of anticipation to see who can triumph beyond the prestigious NCAA.
The U.S. Open began on April 22 and thrilled the nation with high-octane bouts, especially during the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds, which saw a great mix of experienced and fresher collide. Acclaimed wrestlers like Spencer Lee and Kyle Drake have once again stamped their dominance through lightning-fast bouts, alongside a standout performance by the young talent Bo Bassett.
At 57 kg, Nittany Lions’ Luke Lilledahl commanded his mat presence throughout the event, most specifically through his semifinal 10-0 technical win over Liam Cronin. Elsewhere, high schooler Coby Merrill created a great upset through his decimation of the top-seeded wrestler, Mason Parris.
Oklahoma’s top favorite, Jax Forrest, also suffered a major loss at the hands of Ohio State’s Ben Davino, who secured an 8-4 decision win in the 61kg semifinal bout.
As the event comes near to closure, the upcoming finale, scheduled for April 25, is the final hurdle the qualified wrestlers would need to surpass in order to secure their place in the Final X.
