Former Nebraska volleyball player Merritt Beason recently opened up on nearly quitting volleyball before joining the Huskers in 2023. Beason competed for Florida University in the first two years of her collegiate career. She entered the transfer portal in her sophomore year and joined the Huskers.
In an interview with Hurrdat Sports, Beason said that when she entered the portal, she wasn’t sure where she would end up, as she wasn’t confident about her game. She gave the Huskers team a chance, but was also prepared to quit if things went south. Beason added that entering the portal was a leap of faith, but she is now grateful that things worked out the way they did.
“I didn’t really care where I ended up. Honestly, it was kind of like I could be walking into another program that wasn’t a great fit for me and I was kind of in the mind frame of like, ‘Okay I’ll give it another shot and if it’s the same kind of deal, I’ll quit.’ I didn’t know where I was gonna end up. I didn’t necessarily have the best thoughts about myself or my game at that point in time, so I didn’t know if I would be at the JUCO down the road of my hometown or where I was gonna end up,” Beason said.
“You have no idea when you step into the portal and it’s kind of a terrifying thing because it kind of goes both ways like obviously you have to fit their program but they also have to have a need of a right side and someone of around your age and so it’s a very much a leap of faith and I had no idea what was gonna come out of it but very very blessed and very thankful that it happened the way that it did,” she added.
Following her collegiate career, Beason joined the professional circuit with the Atlanta Vibe.
