“College Sports Are Broken”: Riley Gaines Warns NIL and Unlimited Transfers Are Destroying the NCAA

Riley Gaines recently aligned her views with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, over the NIL policy in college sports. The NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) policy allows college athletes to benefit from their personal brand by permitting them to make a profit from sponsorships and endorsements.

During a recent media appearance, when President Trump was asked about his opinions on NIL in college sports, he highlighted its negative effects on colleges and universities, saying they would be unable to pay lucrative salaries to the athletes. He also emphasized that NIL is impacting the professional sporting careers and would hamper the national teams down the line.

“I think that it’s a disaster for college sports. I think it’s a disaster for the Olympics because you know, we are losing a lot of teams,” President Trump said. “I think it’s actually horrible for the players. You’re losing all of these great sports. Not only college football, even basketball is also affected.”

“Colleges can’t afford to be paying the kind of salaries you have been hearing about, and frankly, we did not have any salary cap in sports, and even then, the professional sports willl be out of business,” he added.

Gaines, who has frequently spoken against the NIL policies, opined that it will lead to the downfall of college sports.

“College sports are broken. Unlimited NIL, unlimited transfers, & absolutely zero rules. They’re in total free fall,” Gaines wrote on X.

According to investopedia.com, former LSU Tigers’ gymnast and one of the highest-paid female college athletes, Olivia Dunne’s NIL value was $4.1m. University of Texas football player Arch Manning earned a valuation of $6.5m.

Riley Gaines Slams NCAA Rules Over NIL And Transfer Portals

After Arkansas Razorbacks head coach John Calipari highlighted the issues relating to NIL, transfer portals, and eligibility criteria, Riley Gaines called for reforms in the policies, saying that with the current rules, college sports will be on the verge of downfall and will severely impact women’s sports.

“The NCAA has never been more useless. They’re collapsing under the problems they’ve created. – NIL – transfer portal – eligibility rules – men in women’s sports The current system cannot survive as it is. Reform is needed. And soon,” she wrote on X.

Riley Gaines competed as a swimmer for the University of Kentucky, where she earned the All-American honor 12 times.
