Marcus Blaze Reveals the Heartbreaking Reason Behind His NCAA Title Chase After US Open Win

Marcus Blaze recently opened up about the heartbreaking reason behind him competing for the 2026 NCAA title after securing an impressive victory at the US Open Wrestling Championships. The tournament started on April 22 and will finish on April 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Blaze competed in the 61kg weight class at the US Open Wrestling Championships, where he delivered powerful performances to claim the ultimate title.

After receiving a first-round bye, he dominated with two consecutive technical falls, followed by a 6-1 decision over Seth Gross in the semifinals. Following this win, he advanced to the finals, where he met Ben Davino on April 25.

It was a neck-to-neck showdown, where after a 1-1 tie, Blaze broke the tie with a late single-leg takedown to win 4-1. This win earned him an automatic spot at Final X.

Following this victory, he spoke to the media, who questioned him about how much of this win felt like a redemption for him after the NCAA loss. In the national championships, the Penn State freshman placed fourth at 133 lbs earning All-American honors.

Blaze intensely wanted to win the national title, but he fell short of doing so, and in the post-fight interview at the US Open, he revealed the emotional reason for him chasing the national title. In addition to this, he also made his feelings known about winning the US Open title:

“I think it feels good. just like I said, I had a family member pass away and I really wanted to win a national title for them, but it just apparently wasn’t the right time. But I like I say, you give thanks to your Jesus, their saviour for everything that he does and I just appreciate that stuff and I was just really at ease after the national tournament.

“I think because of how great the people I am are with um they make it feel like I wasn’t the only one that lost. They feel like they lost too. So um yeah, it’s just a big relief to be able to come out and wrestle how you want to wrestle.”

Stating that it felt amazing, he admitted that it was a ‘bittersweet’ feeling for him because he really wished he could become the NCAA champion. Revealing how flu affected his national performance and how grateful he was to get back on the mat, he said:

“It feels amazing. I know it’s it’s bittersweet because I want to be an NCA champion, but uh the flu really does not care what tournament you’re at. So, whether it’s the NCA championship, but I listen to my coaches.
“Coach Scott was like, ‘Hey, dude, the other guy doesn’t care that you’re sick. He doesn’t care at all. He’s going to come try and kill you.’ So, you know, I’m just thankful for him and grateful for all the people that I have. and yeah, it just feels good to get back out on the mat and uh push the pace like I’m used to doing and get into my offense.”
