The Omaha Supernovas’ middle back, Janice Leao, reacted to her team beating Indy Ignite on Saturday, after a brutal bout between the two that pulled in a record crowd. The Supernovas fed off the electrifying reception from the crowd.
On Saturday, the Omaha Supernovas took on Indy Ignite at the Pro Volleyball Federation’s seasonal matchup at the Kiewit court in CHI Health Center Omaha. The match proved to be the most furious one that the Supernovas have been part of.
Celebrating the win, Janice Leao lauded the team’s efforts, spoke about having fun, and also highlighted the team’s turbulent past seasons. She said:
“We were just having an emphasis on joy, we’VE HAD A lots of ups and downs and we needed to focus only on what our goals were from the beginning of the season until working now.”
With this win, Leao is now individually a franchise record holder for most blocks.
The match was sold out, as the arena hosted a record-breaking 16,838 fans, most of whom were rallying behind the Supernovas. This created history as the most-viewed volleyball match in the US in modern history.
Sarah Parsons and Nova’s Head Coach Luka Slabe React to Win
During the post-match conference, one of the two Supernovas captains, Sarah Parsons, and head coach Luka Slabe also shared their experience of the match and what this win means for the entire team.
Slabe spoke about the team’s possible expertise in winning in sets of five and reflected on his pride of being attached to the franchise as a head coach.
“We do it in a crazy fashion, and being in great positions at three or four, but why not go to five and we’re specialists at five and now we’re getting better at winning in fives, so I’m honoured to be part of this team, the franchise as a head coach,” he said.
Parsons also commented on her team’s technical maneuvers that steadily led to victory and mentioned how difficult it’s been for the franchise to deal with the previous losses.
“We’re mixing things up on offence but also at block defence, so I do think that it catapolted us and gave us our confidence back as cuz, when you’re losing it’s hard, so I’m just proud of her group for showing up everyday and it’s hard to show up when nobody else’s around,” she said.
The Supernovas will next face the Grand Rapid Rise on Friday.
