Following his underwhelming run at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Ilia Malinin is all set to make a mark in his upcoming competitions with a fresh look. Malinin started off his Olympic campaign with a gold medal in the team event.
The 21-year-old entered the men’s free skate round after leading the short program with 108.16 points. All Malinin had to do was skate flawlessly with no need to attempt any special maneuver.
However, his final performance was ruined by two unexpected falls. After executing a quadruple flip, the American figure skater tripped while attempting a quadruple Lutz. Moments later, the damage was worsened by a fall while performing a pop opening out of a quad Salchow, which ended his individual medal hope.
More than a month after his Olympic appearance, Malinin has returned to the 2026 World Figure Skating Championships, held at the O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. Ahead of his participation, the American figure skater was seen honing his skills on the ice rink while executing quadruple axels, backflips, and other routines during the practice session in Prague. Along with his impressive skills, Malinin’s new look, where he ditched his long flowy hair and opted for a shorter hairstyle, also garnered attention.
Malinin will compete in Prague to defend his title and win his third consecutive one. After winning a bronze medal in the singles event at the 2023 Saitama edition, he dominated the 2024 and 2025 editions.
Ilia Malinin Highlights The Important Lessons He Learned At The 2026 Winter Olympics
Following his lackluster performance at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Ilia Malinin highlighted his learnings, stating that failing teaches more than learning. He showed his determination for his upcoming competitive appearances to redeem himself.
“Grateful for everything and everyone that helped and supported me throughout this time. Met new people and learned many life lessons. 1: One loss doesn’t change what you have already won. 2: You learn more from failure than success. I came in being one person and left with a changed mind. Nevertheless, I had my amazing moments and memories and did not leave empty handed🏅. Next step, Redemption. See you in Prague 🇨🇿 – QG 🖤💛”
While Malinin will kick off his run at the World Figure Skating Championships in the men’s short program on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the Olympic champion Mikail Shairdrov will be absent in Prague.
