Gabe Arnold Drops Big Update on His Weight Category For The US Open Wrestling Championships

Iowa wrestler Gabe Arnold recently revealed his weight category for the upcoming US Open Wrestling Championships. The event is scheduled to take place from April 22 to 26 at The Expo at World Market Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arnold recently capped off his 2025-26 season after competing at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, where he entered as the No. 27 seed. He competed at the 197 weight class in the tournament and secured a seventh-place finish with a 6-2 decision over Maryland’s Branson John on March 21, 2026. Following this, he earned his All-American honour by besting Rutgers’ Remy Cotton with a 4-3 decision.

He is now gearing up for the US Open Wrestling Championships and recently sat down for a conversation on a talk show, where he opened up about the preparations for the same. Talking about his opponents and their weight class, he revealed that he will be competing at the 79kg weight class at the tournament.

“Yeah, I’m already getting ready. We’re preparing for the US Open. We got a decent amount of guys going. Included, obviously we got Buchanan and DeSanto and Spencer going there to make it to Final X or, well, Buchanan doesn’t get, well, Buchanan gets to go to Final X. Winner of US Open gets to go to Final X. So yeah, most of the guys, yeah, so most of those guys who win, or will go to Final X except for maybe DeSanto if I’m not mistaken, is 61 kg, yeah, because Jack didn’t medal. I forgot it. Yeah, so we’re all, you know, it’s, it’s onward. I’ll be going 79 there, and I’m looking forward to, to wrestling at the senior level, I mean, because it’s something, it’s not one of those things that you dream about, you know,” said Gabe Arnold.

The Iowa wrestler’s road to the All-American honor wasn’t easy, as he endured mental health issues and questioned his worth to compete on the mat.

When Gabe Arnold Opened Up About Mental Health in College Athletics

In January last year, on his 20th birthday, Gabe Arnold sat for a conversation with FloWrestling, where he laid bare his mental health and the highs and lows he navigated in his life and career.  Highlighting how mental health is important, he revealed that he has witnessed the dark seasons of his life and has also fought many ‘demons.’

“Twenty years of life, and it’s been high and low. It’s definitely something that doesn’t get talked about a lot, especially in college athletics, but mental health is really important, and that’s something I have come to prioritize as I’ve been in dark seasons of my life and have fought many demons that don’t really get talked about enough. So, you know, I’m proud of myself for that. It’s a battle that I fight every day, but I think I’m on the winning side of it.”

Gabe Arnold also spoke about his tattoo, which reads ‘Everything is everything,’ a motto he learned from his father.
