Gabby Thomas stunned the track and field community with her latest impressive performance at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix. She surpassed the 11-second barrier in the 100m race for the first time in her career.
Thomas was last seen in action at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, where she made her debut at the event in Nairobi, Kenya, competing in both 100m and 200m events. She turned heads with her notable performances, as she clocked a world lead of 21.89 seconds in the 200m. With this victory, she became the first woman to break 22-second barrier on Kenyan soil.
In addition, she competed in the 100m, where she again stood atop the podium by recording 11.01s. She couldn’t surpass the 11-second barrier because of the strong headwind of -1.1m/s; however, in just a matter of two days, she ran at blistering speed at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 26.
Here, she broke the 11-second barrier for the first time in her career, registering a personal best of 10.95s. Offering a glimpse of her exceptional performance, she posted a video of her race on Instagram, where she is seen cruising toward the finish line, leaving her contenders behind with a notable gap. The post’s caption read:
“Gabs in Gabs 💙 New 100m PB to close out my Africa tour!!”
The second and third positions in this race were bagged by Cambrea Sturgis and Audrey Leduc, who clocked 11.07s and 11.10s, respectively.
Gabby Thomas made her feelings known about competing at the African Tour
Gabby Thomas kicked off her African tour on April 18 at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix in Ethiopia, where she won the 100m race in 11.12s and the 200m dash in 22.15 seconds. Following this, she went on to compete at the Kip Keino Classic and concluded her tour at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix. After winning the 100m in Botswana, she spoke to the media in the post-race interview, where she was asked about the experience of her African tour.
Revealing how special it was for her, she opened up about everything she liked about the tour, including the hospitality and the support from fans.
“Oh, it’s hard. The highlight, they’re all so special in their own way. I think the best part of the African tour that I’ve done is the hospitality and the energy and the fans here, the fans here. You feel it when you come. Everyone’s so excited and they bring really good energy, so hopefully I can bring that spirit back to the US,” said Gabby Thomas.
Talking about her performance, she added:
“I feel winded in the high altitude and a little bit more normal here, but it’s OK. It’s all the same. Nutrition’s been great. The food here is so good. I’ve already slimmed down since coming here, so it’s good.”
She further spoke of the foundation that the African tour helped her build for this season, stating:
“It’s a great foundation to run like this in April and run my PBs and still feel healthy and like I have more in the tank is really exciting for me.”
