Former Iowa State gymnastics assistant coach Ryan Snider took a swipe at the university’s athletics department and Cyclones head coach Ashley Miles Greig after the announcement of the discontinuation of the gymnastics program halfway through the season. The coaching staff, including Miles Greig, Jazmyn Estrella, Mary Wise, and Ragan Smith, was informed that their contracts would not be renewed.
Miles Greig’s contract was set to expire on June 30, 2026. According to reports, the discontinuation resulted from a series of complex internal conflicts among teammates, coaches, and parents. The program’s athletics director, Jamie Pollard, stated that the Cyclones did not have enough athletes to compete. The program also recorded an underwhelming season with seven losses and two wins.
Snider slammed the athletics department, stating that the program ended up in the unfortunate situation after appointing Miles Greig, who had no prior coaching experience, as head coach. He highlighted how multiple athletes, parents, and coaches warned the administration about Miles Greig’s appointment.
“Sad day for this sport,” Snider wrote. “Shame on that entire ISU Athletic Department. All you had to do was take accountability for hiring the wrong person. How many athletes, coaches, and parents went to administration and told you about Ashley? You have issues in every sport, it’s college athletics.”
“You’re dealing with young humans in the most influential part of their lives. The issue recently with gymnastics? You hired a used car salesman to lead a storied division 1 program. In what other sport or professional does hiring someone with zero experience make sense?”
Snider joined the Iowa State Gymnastics team as an assistant coach on July 5, 2023. He was promoted to associate head coach on May 17, 2024, by Miles Greig.
Iowa State’s Record Under Ashley Miles Greig
Ashley Miles Greig joined the Iowa State team as its eighth head coach on April 26, 2023. In her first year, she led ISU to a 10-18 (2-2 Big 12) record after initially helping the team to its highest season-opening score (195.825) since 2004.
Miles Greig helped the ISU program climb from 44th in 2023 to 29th in 2024. However, the team failed to qualify for the postseason in her second year.
During her competitive era from 2003 to 2006, Miles Greig won 20 individual postseason titles for the University of Alabama. She clinched three career titles on vault, becoming the second gymnast in NCAA history and the first in more than 20 years to earn the feat.
After winning her third national vault title in her senior year, she was presented with the sport’s 2006 Honda Award (national gymnast of the year).
