WNBA legend Candace Parker has revealed in an emotional note that her daughter, Lailaa Williams, is now committed to playing volleyball full-time with UC San Diego. This comes amid Lailaa’s official entry into the D1 volleyball program, as announced on April 10.
Born on May 13, 2009, Lailaa is the oldest child of Candace and former NBA player Shelden Williams. Growing up surrounded by sports, Lailaa quickly took a liking to volleyball, starting by playing for Campbell Hall in North Hollywood, California, as a middle blocker, logging a total of 104 kills.
Williams has just signed with a D1 volleyball program, and the excitement spilled over to her basketball mom, Candace, who took to her social media to congratulate her daughter, penning an emotional note.
“To say I’m proud is an understatement……Lailaa is committing to play volleyball at the University of California San Diego! I’ve seen the work, the commitment and the process and that’s what makes me the most proud of who and what you are,” she wrote.
Lailaa shared the news through a social media post, elaborating on how much this means to her and how lucky she’s been to even get the opportunity to play and continue her education at the University of California, San Diego, as a Triton.
Many fans and fellow athletes commented on the mother-daughter’s posts with words of encouragement and messages of unwavering support.
When Candace Parker Talked about the Difficulties of Maternity Leave During the WNBA
Candace Parker spoke extensively about how difficult it is to be there for your family once the professional aspect of being an athlete kicks in.
During an old interview, she highlighted that there was no paid maternity leave and that she started questioning herself on her decisions and went as far as to purchase an entire hotel suite just to take care of her daughter.
She then said that she brought her mom in, and together they had to nurse her daughter, as Parker continued playing on the court. Despite negativity about whether Parker was cut out for the strenuous balance of being an athlete and a mom, she highlighted how her daughter always kept her grounded, focused, and positive.
