Bo Bassett made his feelings known about competing in both the U20 and senior categories at the US Open Wrestling Championships. The tournament commenced on April 22 and will end on April 26 at The Expo at World Market Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Bassett stole the spotlight at the US Open with his impressive performances on the mat. He kicked off the tournament with a dominant first-period pin against Drew Gorman in the round of 32. Following this, he got the better of Aden Valencia in the quarterfinals, securing an 11-10 decision. He met Beau Bartlett in the semifinal round of the senior men’s 65kg bout and prevailed over him by 10-0 technical superiority (3:38) to advance to the finals.
In the final round, he locked horns with Joseph McKenna on April 25 and claimed the 65kg senior freestyle title by defeating the top-seeded with a technical fall (10-0). Bassett solidified his position in the wrestling community by also competing in the U20 bracket after dominating the senior freestyle field.
In the post-fight interview, he was asked about his mindset behind competing in both the senior and U20 categories. He said:
“Probably a lot of insanity. A lot of people told us, “Are you crazy?” And maybe, maybe a little bit, but I just love this sport and I know I live the right lifestyle and I just got to keep sprinting out there and glorifying the Lord.”
Bo Bassett weighs in on progressing to the finals at the US Open Wrestling Championships
“It feels surreal. Wow. I came into the event feeling like I got nothing to lose. I’m in high school and I had a draw that was wars from the start and that’s exciting. This morning, my draw popped. The first four guys were beasts. So, I had to lock in and just give all the glory to God. I’m trying to smile as much as I can out there, but tomorrow I’m going to smile even more. I’m wrestling new 20s and seniors tomorrow and U20s on Sunday. But I love it. I love this sport. Just excited to keep scrapping.”
