The NCAA has recently released new guidelines that pertain specifically to international players who have already turned professional in their sports, especially basketball. Athletes who have previously held professional titles or have been part of major international events in a professional capacity could face severe restrictions on competing in NCAA. The move has sparked debates as major top schools have already recruited professional players, adding further uncertainty to the upcoming NCAA season.
Earlier this month, the NCAA issued new guidelines to schools that involve pre-enrollment eligibility requirements, compensation, and professional involvement. Aside from other pointers, the key point of the guidelines is that any athlete who has entered into a contract or received compensation from a team or franchise that exceeds the minimum expenses of student-athletes will not have their college eligibility reinstated.
While the NCAA aims to preserve the amateur nature of collegiate sports, fans argue that the new changes could severely hamper the current rosters of several institutions that have already signed up international players who met the earlier eligibility requirements.

The NCAA’s new (very poorly timed) rule sends a clear message: international players are no longer welcome in the college game. ACB, France, Italy, Australian NBL and anyone who’s ever played for a EuroLeague team, even for next to nothing, are suddenly permanently ineligible?

Why would it not be ok to take a 22 year old from EuroLeague that made $2 million last year versus taking a 22 year old who made $2 million at an NCAA school that is in the portal?

Colleges made very risky decisions. Moreover lawsuits are being properties wich will ban foreign student athlete scholarships at US colleges.

Is the NCAA actually pretending that American born 20+ year olds who make millions in NIL are not just as much pros as players from Euro leagues?
Several major basketball leagues, alongside the EuroLeague, could fall under heavy scrutiny through the implementation of the new guidelines.
NGB waiver on The Brink of Collapse Amid the New NCAA Guidelines
Since the NCAA released the latest guidelines, putting international athletes under strict check, the NGB waiver, which stands for the National Governing Body waiver, acted as a shield for international students who couldn’t commit to their college enrollment due to national or overseas competitions.
Reports suggest that with the latest eligibility changes now in place, the waiver would no longer help international students to claim eligibility to pursue their college interests as before, and with their new age-based eligibility model already looming around the corner, it could make things all the more difficult.
Despite not having a clear date of implementation, it remains to be seen how the re-rostering of elite lineups takes place in the coming weeks, as the effects of the new guidelines are bound to unfold in phases.
