Marcus Freeman is gearing up for his sixth year as the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He’s spending the offseason revamping the team to emerge as a playoff contender.
On Thursday, the Fighting Irish managed to secure the commitment of another player in this recruiting class of 2027. According to reports, Marcus Freeman and his team flipped the commitment of offensive lineman Jackson Hill from the UCLA Bruins.
“Breaking: Class of 2027 OT Jackson Hill has flipped his commitment from UCLA to Notre Dame, he tells me for @Rivals,” On3’s Hayes Fawcett tweeted. “The 6’7 305 OT had been committed to the Bruins since April 4th.”
Jackson Hill becomes the fourth offensive lineman recruit for Marcus Freeman for the 2027 class alongside Richie Flanigan, James Halter and Oluwasemilore Olubobola. He initially committed to the Bruins back in April. However, Hill decided to flip his decision after Notre Dame reached out to him with an offer.
Jackson Hill gets honest about flipping his commitment from UCLA to Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame
Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame staff made a strong impression on Jackson Hill during his recruitment process. He said that while he had a lot of respect for the UCLA Bruins, playing in South Bend was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
“Notre Dame is the only school I would have flipped from ULCA for,” Hill said as per On3. “It was a hard decision because I really love UCLA and the coaching staff. It was so hard to tell coach Hill and coach Chesney that I was making the change and going somewhere else.
“I have so much respect for those guys and I have no doubt they’re going to win. Coach Chesney is going to turn that program around it would have been fun to be a part of that but I had to make this move and I really feel it’s the best thing for me for what my goals are.”
Marcus Freeman took over Notre Dame in 2020. He helped the program compete in the playoffs during the 2024 campaign, where they ended up losing to Ohio State in the national championship game.
Last season, they finished with a 10-2 record, failing to qualify for the playoffs and declining the invitation to participate in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
