Head coach Deion Sanders was recently accused by former Colorado Buffaloes offensive lineman and trainer Matt McChesney. The comment came while McChesney was discussing the reason behind his strained relationship with former teammate and current Colorado assistant OL coach Andre Gurode.
During his appearance on Zero 2 Sixty Podcast this week, McChesney grabbed headlines after claiming that Sanders instructed members of Colorado’s coaching staff not to communicate with him.
“I love Dre, okay, he’s one of my best friends. We haven’t talked for a long time. And everybody, I mean, you guys don’t know, but I’ll tell you again. Coach Prime told his coaches not to talk to me and not to come to the gym, period,” McChesney said.
Without hesitation, the former trainer mentioned a few names specifically who were asked to maintain a distance from him.
“And told the players, Martinez and Nate Wright and everybody were down working out and Xavier was down working out. They told Xavier not to come anymore and cornered him. They told Martinez not to come anymore, walked in. If you go down to Six Zero, we’re gonna kick you off the team, blah, blah, blah, blah. I just refunded Martinez’s money and investment, told him have a great year,” McChesney continued.
According to McChesney, it was “childish” on the part of Sanders and the program as a whole to not allow athletes and coaching staff to keep in touch.
“I think it’s kind of childish,” McChesney added. “They don’t understand it either. They’re just like, we’re just trying to get better. We really enjoyed it, but we’re not trying to drive a wedge and neither am I. So I’m just answering a question, it’s too bad. I think it’s kind of childish, but again, whatever.”
McChesney also revealed that he will once again get back with Gurode positively once he stops working under Deion Sanders and the Colorado program.
What’s the History with Deion Sanders and Matt McChesney
Deion Sanders and Matt McChesney once held mutual respect, but over time, the relationship deteriorated for each other, resulting in public fallout.
The former Colorado star, McChesney, is the founder of Six Zero Academy in Boulder. Sanders initially supported the program when he first arrived in late 2022. The tensions started escalating over access to Colorado players training at McChesney’s Six Zero Academy. McChesney believes Sanders instructed Colorado coaches and players not to train at his facility. McChesney added that players were allegedly warned that if they train there, they might lose their standing in the program.
Because of this, McChesney’s relationship with Andre Gurode is believed to be this bad.
