“Sanctuary’s Broken”: Urban Meyer Explains Why Brendan Sorsby’s Betting is Unacceptable in College Football

As Brendan Sorsby parts ways with Texas Tech, a whole new debate around what’s acceptable and what’s not has begun, especially since a temporary injunction from a Texas judge technically allowed Sorsby to represent the Red Raiders in the coming season.

That being said, the University decided they were fighting a losing battle and confirmed Sorsby was on his way out, but now that he’s leaving, experts continue to talk about the issue around betting.

In particular, legendary college football coach Urban Meyer has come out and explained why gambling is such a dangerous thing to be allowed in any capacity when it comes to college football.

“But why it’s such a big deal is this. Inside that locker room, inside that football facility, inside the meeting rooms, there’s only a small swath of people that actually know what’s going on,” he said on The Triple Option podcast.

“And when you determine who’s gonna win and lose, the number one thing is always the health of your team. Who’s hurt? That’s not released to the media, in college sports you don’t have to release that.

“Only the coaches and the players on that team know that, and that’s your sanctuary, that can go nowhere, because if the other team knows that, Mark, if I know that your corner is banged up, I’m gonna go after him. Only the sanctuary of that facility is exactly that, it goes nowhere. And the sanctuary’s broken if now someone’s using that information to go gamble.”

Sorsby’s Agent Makes Huge Claim About Cincinnati

The saga isn’t quite over yet, as Brendan Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, confirmed that Cincinnati knew about his gambling but stayed quiet for two years.

“If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati. Because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn’t do anything about it. That’s the part of the story that gets lost,” he said.

Lots of questions remain around the future of Sorsby, but it’s clear that a no-nonsense approach is being taken around gambling by the NCAA who banned the quarterback from playing in the first place.
