What Did Paul Allen Pay for the Seattle Seahawks? Purchase Price and Value Increase Explained

Months after winning the Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks are being sold to the Khosla family, as the late team owner, Paul Allen, had wished before he passed away.

The late former owner had previously bought the team for $194 million in 1997, with his estate getting a much bigger amount for it almost 30 years later, selling the team for an NFL-record $9.6 billion, which is a massive return on investment.

Vinod Khosla, who is a Silicon Valley venture capitalist and founded the firm Khosla Ventures, is the one leading the purchase of the team, with the Allen estate announcing that the process of selling the team had begun on Feb. 18.

This meant that they had been working on a deal for months as they awaited the various NFL owners to ratify the purchase agreement, with a meeting over the matter being scheduled for August.

The new prospective owner, Khosla, is also a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers, owning 3.1% of the team. However, with his purchase of the rival Seattle Seahawks, he would have to relinquish his stake with the Niners.

A new ownership often means that there would be uncertainty for teams, but with the Seahawks having a lease on Lumen Field until 2032, they are not expected to go anywhere soon, especially since they also have three 10-year options available.

Top 5 Most Expensive NFL Franchise Sales

With the sale of the Seattle Seahawks, this is now the most expensive team to be sold at $9.6 billion. No longer are NFL teams being sold in the hundreds of millions, with teams being sold in the billions since the 2010s. Here are the Top 5 NFL team purchases so far:

    1. Seattle Seahawks, 2026 – $9.6 billion
    2. Washington Commanders, 2023 – $6.05 billion
    3. Denver Broncos, 2022 – $4.65 billion
    4. Carolina Panthers, 2018 – $2.275 billion
    5. Buffalo Bills, 2014 – $1.4 billion

Despite now being the most expensive football team ever sold, the Seattle Seahawks still have not broken that $10 billion mark that the Los Angeles Lakers had in 2025, when the team was sold for that amount. That same year, their eternal rival, the Boston Celtics, was also sold for a massive $6.1 billion.

The Seahawks sale is also much larger than what any European soccer team has been sold for so far, with the highest being Chelsea, which was sold for $5.3 billion in 2022. This was also a much larger sale than any MLB team, with the New York Mets being sold for $2.4 billion in 2020.
