Conor McGregor’s comeback ended in heartbreaking fashion at UFC 329, and it did not take long for former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III to weigh in on the whole situation.
McGregor’s comeback fight against Max Holloway lasted just 69 seconds after the former two-division UFC champion landed awkwardly while attempting a flying kick early in the opening round. Unable to continue after injuring his right knee, McGregor suffered a TKO defeat.
Shortly after the bout, Griffin shared his blunt message on social media.
“Conor McGregor needs to retire. It’s over.”
Some fans agreed that another major injury at age 37 could mark the end of McGregor’s time in the UFC. Others, however, pushed back against Griffin’s comments.
“That’s really ironic coming from you,” one user wrote.
The remark referenced Griffin’s own NFL career, which was heavily impacted by injuries.
“He’ll be back. He’s not ending like that,” an optimistic fan wrote.
“What a shame for a legend to go out like that,” one fan wrote.
Another added, “That might have been his swan song, hate to see him go out like that.”
“Just a money grab! What a sham this sport has become!” one user commented.
Another wrote, “Agreed. Super inflated. Imagine paying for that?”
Conor McGregor Breaks Silence After Injury
Following the fight, McGregor skipped his post-fight press conference and later addressed fans on social media writing.
“I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight,” McGregor wrote. “This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
UFC president Dana White said the promotion believes McGregor may have suffered a torn ACL, although no official diagnosis has been confirmed.
“I mean, I was expecting at least a one-round war,” UFC CEO Dana White said after the fight. “Who knew what Conor was capable of as far as cardio, whatever else, after a five-year layoff, and there you go. We’re assuming a blown ACL. I’m no doctor, but that’s what I figured when I saw it, and doctors think the same thing too.”
For now, McGregor’s MMA future remains uncertain. While Griffin believes the former champion should retire, many fans are not yet ready to accept the end of star’s legendary career.
