Former New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee is facing first-degree murder charges for the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo. The 31-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday last week, when the police officers were dispatched to a residency among reports of a CPR in progress at the location.
Initial findings pointed to a homicide case, and Lee was taken into custody, said the Hamilton County (Tennessee) Sheriff’s Office on Friday. Furthermore, there were also indications that evidence had been tampered with, for which Lee was also charged with tampering with evidence.
The victim presented a stab wound, a broken neck, a bite mark, and bruises, and the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma. The prosecution is looking for the death penalty, according to reports, and on Wednesday, Darron Lee faced a judge who denied the possibility of a bond.
Who Was Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo?
Not much is known about who Perpétuo was beyond Darron Lee’s girlfriend. Her family has been vocal about their need for privacy and justice during this case. In a statement given to the media, they said:
“At this moment of deep pain and mourning, we kindly ask for understanding and respect as our family gathers strength to speak publicly about this tragedy,” the family wrote.
“May justice be done, and may no other woman ever have to endure such an atrocity,”
Who Was Darron Lee?
Lee is a former NFL player who was the first-round pick of the New York Jets in 2016. He won Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2019 season.
He spent six years in the NFL, playing with the New York Jets (2016-2018), Kansas City Chiefs (2019), Buffalo Bills (2020), and the Las Vegas Raiders (2021, although only with the preseason squad. He was put on the injured reserve and released before the start of the regular season).
He never won any major individual accolades, nor did he reach his potential as the 20th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. Lee played at Ohio State in college, where he won the national championship in the 2015 season. That year, he was named a Second Team All-American and a First Team All-Big Ten selection.
