Brendan Sorsby’s hopes of securing an NFL contract suffered a major blow as the league rejected his petition to be a part of the NFL supplemental draft. The move basically renders him unable to play competitive football for the time being after Texas Tech and the quarterback parted ways following his gambling controversy.
Despite many praising the NFL’s decision, one former NFL player feels it sets a negative precedent for the future.
“Whatever you think about Sorbsy the NFL just set a very weird precedent essentially suspending a player for 1 year that wasn’t in the NFL and thus broke no NFL rules,” Tyler Polumbus wrote.
“NFLPA probably isn’t overly motivated to fight for him either. Sorsby isn’t in the union…”
Polumbus won the Super Bowl in his second stint at the Denver Broncos, and since his retirement, has entered the world of broadcast and media, often giving opinions that spark debates among fans.
What Reason Did the NFL Give For Rejecting Brendan Sorsby’s Petition?
According to a letter from the NFL to Brendan Sorsby, the petition he and his team sent was “without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions.”
According to ESPN, Sorsby’s attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, said that the NFL’s move to avoid having an NFL supplemental draft altogether “is a violation of the CBA and the law.”
“We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA,” he wrote.
It seems that the situation is far from settled and we could have some more twists and turns along the way.
