Former Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns offensive guard Tre Johnson has died at the age of 54. He passed away on Sunday, suddenly and unexpectedly, according to his family. He retired from the NFL in 2002 and has been working as a high school history teacher in Maryland as of late.
His wife, Irene Johnson, released the following statement through her Facebook account explaining that he died during a family trip.
“His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock,” Irene wrote. “If you know Tre’, you know what a devoted and loving father, he was to his children.”
“Tre’ lived for his kids’ sports activities and supported them through every practice and game until he took his last breath,” she added.
“He was known for his durability and strength during his time in Washington,” Irene further wrote. “He loved the game and prided himself on his tremendous knowledge of it.”
“After retirement, he also found his second career passion, education. He worked as a History Teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda Maryland, where he was beloved by the young male students he mentored and the faculty,” she continued. “His recent battles with health issues forced him to take a leave of absence.
“We will miss him so much.💔💔💔,” Irene concluded.
Johnson was a father of four, and according to his wife, he was an incredible mentor to young men while he worked as a high school teacher.
Tre Johnson’s Football Career
Johnson played college football at Temple, earning a First Team All-East selection in 1991. He was then selected by the Washington Redskins in the 1994 NFL Draft, with the 31st overall pick of that year in the second round of the event.
His best season in the NFL came in 1999, when he earned a Second Team All-Pro selection and a call-up to that year’s Pro Bowl. He spent the period between 1994 and 2000 with the Redskins, one season with the Cleveland Browns in 2001, and a final season with Washington in 2002.
Tre Johnson was a history teacher and football coach at Landon School, a private school in Bethesda, Maryland. His wife did admit that health issues had forced the former NFL offensive lineman to take a leave of absence from his teaching duties.
The Redskins took a minute to pay their respects on social media late on Sunday.
