Cleveland Browns DC Candidates: Insider Names Finalists To Replace Jim Schwartz After Sudden Move

The Cleveland Browns are at a crossroads as they have a new head coach and now they are nearing a decision on who their new defensive coordinator will be. From the look of things, the team has now cut down their candidates to the final three.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler claimed these are the three finalists, and they include current Cleveland Browns linebackers coach Jeremy Tarver, Atlanta Falcons defensive passing game coordinator Mike Rutenberg and Houston Texans defensive passing game coordinator Cory Undlin.

Undlin is reportedly set to be interviewed this Sunday, according to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot. The team had previously interviewed Rutenberg last Wednesday.

The three finalists will be replacing their former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who left the team after failing to become their new head coach to replace Kevin Stefanski. It was Schwarz who built up the Browns to become one of the best defensive teams in the NFL, so whoever is replacing him has some very big shoes to fill.

Undlin is seen as the favorite, as he has ties with newly-hired Browns head coach Todd Monken. The two had previously worked together for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2009 to 2010.

New Browns Defensive Coordinator Must Be Able To Work Well With Myles Garrett

Meanwhile, whoever among the three finalists that the Browns choose must be able to work with one important person, and that is the Browns pass rusher, Myles Garrett, who broke defensive records with the Browns last year. Garrett has been praising Jim Schwarz as of late, and this could mean that he is voicing out who he prefers to work under.

“I don’t think I get two DPOYs without Jim. He helped mold my potential as a player to put me into a scheme and a system that fit me well and enabled me to do what I do best—pin my ears back, rush the passer. Attack the front. You see the front, you attack it. See ball, get ball,” he said during an appearance on Micah parsons’ podcast.

Todd Monken has said that he will be keeping the defensive playbook Schwarz left behind, though there are fears that whoever becomes the new defensive coordinator will certainly change things up.
