Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken walked away with a lot of positives from the team’s voluntary minicamp. Monken took over as the head coach of the Browns in January 2026 after two years as the Ravens’ OC.
Monken previously worked with the Browns in 2019 as their offensive coordinator. He knows that he has a big task at hand as the Cleveland Browns have struggled over the last few years. Monken must figure out the quarterback puzzle if he wants to give his team a chance next season.
During a recent press conference, Monken was asked about the voluntary minicamp, which was attended by Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel. Monken summarized the three-day experience as “awesome.”
He said that the overall atmosphere at the minicamp was very promising. He said the weather was great, players were in good spirits, they played loud music to get into the rhythm, and even ignored the neighbors complaining about the noise.
“They don’t like it; they can move,” Monken said.
“Being out there with the guys and getting a little bit of a feel for who we have on our roster, and I thought all three quarterbacks, at times, you could see positives in their games. And learning a new system, and they’ve been awesome in the meeting rooms and on the field,” he said.
Monken said that veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has been with the Browns since 2022, looked really good.
“Deshaun looked really good at times, and there are things he gotta work on. Same with Shedeur and Dillon,” Monken said.
Even though Monken didn’t go into details about the minicamp and his quarterbacks, he said that it was really fun being out there with them.
Todd Monken on Drafting Spencer Fano
Spencer Fano is a 21-year-old offensive tackle from the Utah Utes. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2026 NFL Draft as their ninth pick. During the press conference, Monken was asked about the selection.
When asked what he saw in Fano and what stood out for him to draft the 21-year-old, Monken said, “Character, athleticism, toughness.” Monken said that Fano will play as a left tackle for the Cleveland Browns.
Interestingly, Fano hasn’t played at that position for a while, but Monken isn’t worried about that because he believes Fano can adapt quickly and he’ll be more effective as a left tackle.
