Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson announced he has been diagnosed with ALS during an appearance on “Good Morning America” on Monday.
The 39-year-old revealed that the initial diagnosis was that he only had a few months left to live. However, he said in his interview with anchor Michael Strahan that it led him to find another doctor who was willing to offer alternative solutions.
“They told us about a medication that might extend life by a few months, then they told us to get our affairs in order,” he said. “It was hard hearing that, but after watching Good Morning America and seeing Dr. Merritt with Eric Dane. We reached out to her. She was willing to think more creatively, offering experimental treatments that might help and advance research.”
Johnson also spoke about the first symptoms that he noticed, which led to the subsequent diagnosis:
“I first noticed weakness in my right hand. At first, it was little things like my grip didn’t feel right, and I wasn’t as strong as I’ve always been.”
As Johnson’s interview gained traction online, NFL fans took to social media to express support for the former Titans standout.

Chris Johnson Credits Wife, Brittany, For Continued Support
As Johnson got into details about his current state and the procedures he has been following on his medical journey, he showered praise on his wife, Brittany, for standing by his side.
Johnson also claimed that his wife and kids were the reason that gave him the strength to go through the trials and tribulations of ALS.
“Without a doubt, my wife, Brittany, she hasn’t left my side through any of this. My kids are also a huge part of why I keep going every day,” Johnson said about his inspiration. “I wake up wanting more time with them to make more memories, and just be there, that they give me a reason to keep fighting.”
Johnson became the second former Titans player to be diagnosed with ALS after Tim Shaw revealed his diagnosis during an ice bucket challenge in 2014.
The former NFL running back played for East Carolina, making the All-Conference USA first team before being selected by the Titans in 2008, where he spent six seasons before moving to the New York Jets. He retired in 2018 as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.
