There was a lot of uncertainty around where Ty Simpson would end up in the 2026 NFL Draft, as analysts couldn’t pinpoint the exact team where he would fit in perfectly.
Some predicted Simpson would go to the Steelers, others predicted it would be the New York Jets, and some even spoke about the former Alabama star possibly going to the Browns.
However, on the night of the draft, it was announced that the Los Angeles Rams had picked Simpson as the No. 13th overall pick, after which fans noticed head coach Sean McVay’s unique reaction.
While talking to McVay on the phone, the former Alabama star expressed his excitement and said, “Coach, let’s make history,” to which McVay said, “Let’s enjoy this one night,” which sounded a bit salty to some viewers and analysts.
Talking about McVay’s reaction, Mike Florio said:
“McVay was salty. McVay was truculent. McVay was pissed. When he met with reporters on Friday night, he admitted it. He said his phone had blown up. He laughed as he came in, “Do I look angry now?” And then he said he was indeed grumpy on Thursday night. He attributed it to other issues. You know, we all have things that can cause us to have a bad day. I can relate.”
“Whether those things are my fault or not my fault, they can make me a little grumpy.
But I also think that this was McVay’s way of ensuring that quarterback Matthew Stafford did not get the wrong idea, did not emerge with a misimpression that the selection of Simpson is like Aaron Rodgers-Jordan Love or Kirk Cousins-Michael Penix Jr.
They’re not looking to close the door on Matthew Stafford,” he added.
Joel Klatt Shares Honest Thoughts on Rams Picking Ty Simpson As No.1 Overall Pick
Joel Klatt, who has been vocal about his concern about Ty Simpson having only one year of experience as a starting quarterback in college, spoke about him getting picked by the Rams as the No. 13 overall pick.
Klatt said he is on board with the overall evaluation of Simpson, as his throws are not like those of someone who has just one year of experience in college.
”You’re banking on the fact that he is son of a coach, grew up in the locker room and can get better by not playing.” Klatt added.
Klatt told Rich Eisen that he believes Simpson should sit behind a quarterback and develop. He also highlighted that Simpson sat at Alabama for three years in college, and predicted that he will sit behind Matthew Stafford for two years.
